Hehasexciteddomesticinsurrectionamongstus,andhasendeavoredtobringontheinhabitantsofourfrontiers,themercilessIndiansavages,whoseknownruleofwarfare,isanundistinguisheddestructionofallages,sexes,andconditions.

Ineverystageoftheseoppressionswehavepetitionedforredressinthemosthumbleterms:ourrepeatedpetitionhavebeenansweredonlybyrepeatedinjury.Aprincewhosecharacteristhusmarkedbyeveryactwhichmaydefineatyrantisunfittobetherulerofafreepeople.

NorhavewebeenwantinginattentiontoourBritishbrethren.Wehavewarnedthemfromtimetotimeofattemptsbytheirlegislaturetoextendanunwarrantablejurisdictionoverus.Wehaveremindedthemofthecircumstancesofouremigrationandsettlementhere.Wehaveappealedtotheirnativejusticeandmagnanimity,andwehaveconjuredthembythetiesofourcommonkindredtodisavowtheseusurpation,whichwouldinevitablyinterruptourconnectionsandcorrespondence.Theytoohavebeendeaftothevoiceofjusticeandofconsanguinity.Wemust,therefore,acquiesceinthenecessity,whichdenouncesourseparation,andholdthem.,asweholdtherestofmankind,enemiesinwar,inpeacefriends.

We,therefore,theRepresentativesoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica,inGeneralCongressassembled,appealingtothesupremeJudgeoftheworldfortherectitudeofourintentions,do,inthename,andbyauthorityofthegoodpeopleoftheseColonies,solemnlypublishanddeclare,ThattheseUnitedStatesColoniesandIndependentStates;thattheyareabsolvedbyfromallallegiancetotheBritishCrown,andthatallpoliticalconnectionbetweenthemandtheState,theyhavefullpowertolevywar,concludepeace,contractalliances,establishcommerce,andtodoallotheractsandthingswhichIndependentStatesmayofrightdo.Andforthesupportofthisdeclaration,withafirmrelianceontheprotectionofDivineProvidence,wemutuallypledgetoeachotherourlives,ourfortunes,andoursacredhonor.
